Dark water stretched out in all directions, blurring into a dim, purple dusk. The waves laughed below, rolling over on each other and applauding her with louder blows against the ship.  Mary rushed to the back deck, away from the eyes of the crew, and dropped to her knees behind a large spool, tucking her skirts beneath her and pressing her back into the coiled rope.
